Peyton Manning retired. No surprise there. Let the debate begin. Peyton supporters couldn’t be happier he got that elusive SB win number two. Now he’s undoubtedly the best ever, right? Wrong. The Denver Broncos just won Super Bowl 50 in spite of Peyton Manning. That Bronco defense is among the best ever. Now, that being said, Peyton is probably the smartest QB ever and truly an offensive coordinator on the field–even with his rapidly diminishing skills and athleticism.
We compared 12 QBs, the 12 that I feel span generations and have an argument to be in the top five. Johnny Unitas, Tom Brady, John Elway, Joe Montana, Dan Marino, Peyton Manning, Terry Bradshaw, Brett Farve, Aaron Rodgers, Troy Aikman, Drew Brees and Steve Young. Guys like Roger Staubach, Warren Moon and Jim Kelly certainly have solid arguments to be top 10. But I don’t think anyone really thinks any of them is the greatest ever, which this is all about. The research was intense and thorough. Listen to the podcast (best interviews to yet) for the full story, but what was clear was who the top four are: Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Peyton Manning and Brett Favre. The other eight got hazy who was no. 5 or who was no. 12. But the order was something like this: Steve Young, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Terry Bradshaw, Dan Marino, Troy Aikman, John Elway, Jonny Unitas.
Here’s a shot of all the stats we dug into on each of the 12 guys–showing just my top four of all time.
Blue = 1st among the 12; Yellow = 2nd; Purple = 3rd
